This is all great. FYI I haven an idea of what we could do I just haven’t had time to type it up. It wouldn’t be implemented this season anyway so I’ll get to it in the following weeks. Picking this discussion back up. Eager to hear your idea.

Ok Here’s my thoughts on a possible G-League assignment option:
General Rules:
- You have two available G-League Spots - There are two ways to sign someone to a G-League spot. Draft someone in the second round, or sign someone as a Free Agent. - The monetary amount of the contract (more on that below) counts towards your team salary but players in these two spots don’t count towards your 10 +2 Roster spots. - You can activate anyone on a G-League spot to your active roster during the season at any time but once you do that they lose their G-League designation and count as a Roster spot. - There is a special 10-Game call up designation if your team qualifies. The rules are the same for regular 10-Day contracts, but the player goes back to the G-League after the 10 Days. This can happen once per G-League player owned per year. - G-League players can be traded, the trade proposal must designate if the new owner will keep the player as a G-League spot or part of the active roster. - A “g” will be placed after the year on the Roster to designate G-League Roster. Once the player is put on the active roster the “g” is removed. Examples: $400,000 2020g $500,000 2020g (2021x, 2022x)
2nd Round:
- Any player drafted in the second round is eligible to be on a G-League roster spot for all three year options of their contract. - You designate at the beginning of the year (when we do option pick ups) if a 2nd Round player is G-League or active roster or option declined. Once a player is made active roster they are no longer eligible for G-League assignment for all future seasons (unless using the10-Day contract clause above). - When the third year ends the owner has resign rights but the player is no longer eligible for a G-League assignment and must be signed to the active roster.
Free Agent:
- A player is eligible to be signed to a G-League roster spot from Free Agency if they fall in one of two categories: Has played less then 60 games in their career at no more then a 15 minutes a game average OR Has played less then 20 games in their career at no more then 25 minutes a game average. - A G-League contract is $400k for 1 year at 0.4 Points. You designate when making the bid at Free Agency that this is a G-League bid and the points value. Once someone else beats the bid the player is now an active Free Agent bid and no longer eligible for a G-League spot. Whoever wins, the player counts towards their Roster spaces. - G-League Free Agency contracts are for one year only and once the year ends and the player is still on a roster, the owner has Resign Rights for that player in the next Free Agency.

I'm a big fan of this idea. Completely support it. Thank you for taking the time to think it through and put this together.
I do have a few thoughts about some of the logistics/rules.
"There are two ways to sign someone to a G-League spot. Draft someone in the second round, or sign someone as a Free Agent."
I think this should include 1st Round picks as well. As the league prepares to change their "one and done" rule we will see more 18 yo rookies entering the draft. And we already see some teams prioritizing youth and potential on their draft boards and drafting younger guys at the end of the 1st round while some 20+ yo juniors and seniors get pushed into the top of the 2nd round. There are also injury concerns for some 1st round picks either prior to draft or during offseason that would make them G-League prospects IMO.
Examples of 1st round potential G Leaguers:
2017 Harry Giles (Injury) Justin Patton (Injury) DJ Wilson Tyler Lydon Caleb Swanigan Tony Bradley
2018 Michael Porter Jr (Injury) Zhaire Smith (Injury) Anfernee Simons Dzanan Musa
"When the third year ends the owner has resign rights but the player is no longer eligible for a G-League assignment and must be signed to the active roster."
I'm not sure why the team that drafted the G-League player loses the G-League eligibility after season 3 while other teams could sign that same player to a G-League contract per the rules. I would think if the team that drafted that player wants to hold onto them for another year in the G-League while they develop, rebound from injury, or prepare overseas they should be allowed to do so while maintaining resign rights.
Couple of examples:
2015 Draft - Nikola Milutinov - Spurs 1st round draft and stash. Still not in NBA. Without having an opinion on whether or not a team should draft a guy like that and stash them long term, the rules should not prohibit it. Assuming these G-League rules were in effect for the 2015 draft and a team drafted him in the 2nd round, put him on their G-League roster, and picked up his option all three seasons of the deal, in this past offseason that owner would not be able to sign him to a G-League deal while another GM could. - Juan Pablo Vaulet - Hornets 2nd round - RJ Hunter - Celtics 1st Round
2016 Draft - If these guys were drafted in the 2nd round and their options were picked up by their respective teams this season they would become FA's and the team that drafted them would not be able to sign them to a one-year G-League deal. - Guerschon Yabusele - Wade Baldwin - Malachi Richardson - Daniel Hamilton
One other question, would G-League assignments be indefinite regardless of NBA player usage? For example, let's say I drafted Rodions Kurucs in the 2nd round in the past draft (I didn't, but should have) and assigned him to the G-League at the start of the season. Right now he has 30 games under his belt @ 20+ minutes per game and will most likely play over 60 games this season. Would my team lose the ability to pick up his option and keep his G-League designation? I guess I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to add a GP restriction to draft picks, meaning if they have played in over a certain amount of NBA games they lose their G-League eligibility.

I meant to reengage this early but you broguht up good points New York and here's the rules with changes made in red
General Rules:
- You have two available G-League Spots - There are two ways to sign someone to a G-League spot. Draft someone, or sign someone as a Free Agent.
Draft Pick:
- Any player drafted is eligible to be on a G-League roster spot for their whole rookie of their contract not matter how much they play so long they aren't activated during the season. - You designate at the beginning of the year (when we do option pick ups) if a player is G-League or active roster or option declined (if applicable). Once a player is made active roster they are no longer eligible for G-League assignment for all future seasons (unless using the 10-Day contract clause above). - When the rookie contract ends the owner has resign rights for the player, if the player at that time still meets the criteria listed below for a Free agent to be G-League spot the owner can choose to sign them to a one year G-League deal for the next year at the price also listed below. This MUST happen during the early period when owner make Qualifying offers. Once that period ends the player is put in the Free Agent pool with their resign rights owned. Future one-season G-League offers can be made at QO ONLY if the player is still eligible. - If the player was activated at some point during its rookie contract, losing it's G-League designation, but is still eligible at the end of their contract with the criteria listed below, the owner can choose to make a G-League bid DURING FREE AGENCY if they wish. They cannot make the offer during the QO period making the player susceptible to being bid on by someone else.
Free Agent:
- A Free Agent player is eligible to be signed to a G-League roster spot from Free Agency if they fall in one of two categories: Has played less then 60 games in their career at no more then a 15 minutes a game average OR Has played less then 20 games in their career at no more then 25 minutes a game average. - If the player still meets the games and minutes eligibility the owner can extend another year G-League offer during QO's to keep the player out of Free Agency, but this MUST happen during that time period.
I was thinking this off-season of having a one-time only option for anyone with a player that counts under the games and minutes player restrictions on their roster to be able to assign a current player to a G-League spot during our QO period.

I was thinking this off-season of having a one-time only option for anyone with a player that counts under the games and minutes player restrictions on their roster to be able to assign a current player to a G-League spot during our QO period. I think this is awesome and will be a very cool addition to the league. I realize this will take more work for you as commissioner so if you want to designate a couple g-league eligibility audits during the year or want to create a yearly G-League commissioner designation for a GM to oversee whatever process is in place for this I'm happy to raise my hand. Also, I like the above idea of kickstarting the G-League with a one-time designation option. I wonder if this option should be available to new GM's as well going forward, as a companion to the amnesty waivers in place? For example, I amnesty waived Justin Patton, TJ Leaf, and Malachi Richardson. The option to G-League designate one of those players would have been cool.
