Rubio is not the real deal. I'm so glad as a Warriors fan that they didn't take Curry and we would be stuck waiting two seasons for a point guard that appeared good in the Olympics and then failed for three years in Europe.

Rubio is not the real deal. I'm so glad as a Warriors fan that they didn't take Curry and we would be stuck waiting two seasons for a point guard that appeared good in the Olympics and then failed for three years in Europe. Question: Have you even watched him play more than a few minutes in NBA action? I am a Timberwolves fan but even tho I have been a Rubio guy for awhile I had a lot of worries during his Euro play. But a lot of that could be explained away with some good rationale. Still tho, I was firmly (and privately) in a wait and see mode. I watched the entire first game against OKC, a lot of the Bucks game and I didn't get to see his best game yet, that being the one against the Heat. All not exactly chump opponents mind you and all where he progressively played well and even got better. Curry and Rubio are and forever will be very different players and I liked both of them a lot. Curry is a scorer, plain and simple. Scoring (outside shooting) is the part of Rubio's game that will need work over the years. But in an offense with so many slashing and uptempo 3 and 4 men and an athletic center (Love) and even guys at the 2 who really are SF guys playing the SG position that envisions itself as a fast-break offense for a bulk of the game Rubio and his amazing court awareness, ball handling and unselfish amazing passing ability are pure gold. If he can prove to be a decent NBA shooter he will be a great player in the league and not just a very good one. Now, if you have watched a lot of Rubio NBA film and have generated your opinion as such....well...then we just disagree.

I have watched entire Barcelona games, and in all of them, I was just waiting for Rubio to do something special. He could just never deliver. Curry is more then just a shooter. I watched him evolve from a shooter to a stealmaster to a passer. He can do anything. I am not saying that Rubio will not become a solid starting point guard in the NBA. I'm just saying he will never be close to Paul/Williams/Rondo or even Westbrook/Rose/Curry. His best case scenario is that he one day tries to compete for an All-Star spot.

I have watched almost zero Euro games. But it's a totally different brand of basketball so it's a bit hard to cross compare. That's why I waited to see what he would do state side. The guy is a very effective floor general already. He obviously has elite status passing ability. Not sure the level he will be on the defensive end but he did have Westbrook upset a bit and forced Westbrook into stopping driving the lane and settling for jump shots so in the short term he had done well. Scoring wise he has done much better out of the gate then expected. I think the remainder of the season and next season he will shoot at a lower percentage. But man....he already fills the bill of exactly what the Wolves need in the offense. Rondo is not in the Williams (I would list him first) and Paul level. I even would put Westbrook and Rose over Rondo. I think Rondo is a very very very good player but he is surrounded by (aging granted) great talent and that will make any PG look better and be better able to operate the offense.

Rondo is obviously an elite passer with or without the Big 3. If you want proof of this, just look at what Brandon Bass is doing this year. The problem with Rondo is his lack of confidence when shooting, which prevents from averaging over 15 points a game, at least until the Big 3 leave. His unwillingness to shoot is frustrating, especially because, based on his small sample size, he actually is an above average shooter with excellent form. His inability to consistantly hit free throws is simply mistifying, especially because it is rare that a point guard has that disability. Still, his pure passing ability is probably the best in the league, right up there with Williams and Paul. Westbrook, Curry, and Rose are undoubtedly more complete offensive players, but Rondo is a pure point guard who can also lead the league in steals. If Rubio were to prove me wrong and become great, it would be as a Rondo type, not a Williams or CP3.

Yeah, Rubio doesn't project to being a big time scorer. So in that regard he will likely never be Williams or CP3. But...and I say this with hesitation as the sample size is EXTREMELY small....but we might...just might....be seeing the beginnings of the best ball distributer the game has ever seen. I don't usually go out on such a limb. But this time....I will.
Good back and forth convo tho. We disagree a bit, but, we bring good knowledge to the debate.

I was a bit skeptic about his performance in Europe, though I knew stats aren't the same there (you practically need to pass an alley oop to get an assist accounted for) and the game is different. Seeing him play now makes me think he'll be a pretty good player. Can't say he's all-star stuff just yet because I'm not seeing the whole game in him yet. It will be interesting to see how he grows in the league

Being a Minnesota fan, I'm loving Rubio so far... haven't seen anyone pass like that in a while.

He European system of assists is much better than that of the NBA. Here there ar plenty of assists credited that nothing to do with the passer.

He is the real deal, no doubt. I don't know about the Rondo comparisons, I kinda see it though . . . He's more John Stockton to me. Can put the ball wherever he wants to and he sees angles no one else sees. I'd take him over Steph Curry any day if I was running an NBA team. In fantasy though, Curry by a mile.
I still wonder, is his early success a product of him maturing for a few more years in Europe before coming over? Or would we be looking at a third year all-star right now if he had just bitten the bullet and come over when drafted?
Some players have serious talent but really need to mature before entering the NBA (Sebastien Telfair, Rudy Fernandez, list is reeeeeeeeeally long) and others seem like they waste years of talent in other leagues when they are definitely NBA ready (Manu Ginobili, Arvydas Sabonis, Tim Duncan). He's still only 21, so its not like he wasted a ton of time in Europe, but if he was doing this at 19 . . . . he'd be turning a lot more heads. Or maybe those two extra years at home are what will ultimately make him a success.

I was at the Wolves game tonight, another nice game from Rubio. He's been consistently good with some "delicious" dimes

Some bad turnovers so far but what rookie doesn't have some...kid looks like something special if not at least someone to put butts in the seats

Target Center hasn't had this much buzz since the Wolves lost in the Semi's.
